“I have enjoyed learning about Woodland management and bio-diversity. Learning new horticulture information and I have lead groups. I love coming to WELLIEs and it boosts my confidence each week.”
“I attend a weekly WELLIES group. I just wanted to drop you a note to say thank you to yourselves and all the volunteers for the invaluable help you are giving me. My health issues have been ongoing for over two years and I’m now going through the loss of a career I loved. My life is currently consumed with hospital appointments, assessments and treatments, dismissal meetings, financial worries and loss of identity. I have become very isolated from family and friends. I’m exhausted by this and I’m very aware I’m spiralling into a dark, lonely place. I happened to come across WELLIES when I saw a flyer at my local pharmacy. I’m so pleased I managed to take those huge steps to contact someone and arrive on my first day. The driver and Ambassador who met me when I arrived for the minibus were a great help. I burst into tears, and was kindly given a therapy dog to cuddle which was really helpful. My first day was incredibly overwhelming but everyone, including the tutors, volunteers and other people were able to help and often spotted me “crumbling” before I realised. Attending WELLIES gives me a day in the week when I can try to be me. No one knows my background or medical history and I don’t discuss it. I can leave the health, employment and financial worries in the carpark when I get on the minibus. If I’m having a bad day and can’t make it, that’s ok. Likewise, if I’m struggling, I’m able to choose what activities I can do. There’s no pressure. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the gardening and learning new skills in the wood shed. I never imagined I would be able to make delicate wooden items while becoming completely absorbed by it! I’ve struggled with isolation, but at the group, I’ve made some lovely friends and I’m getting more confident with interacting with people. The hot, healthy meal is appreciated too! I’m often reliant on junk food. I can’t thank you all enough for your support during a difficult time in my life. I now really look forward to WELLIES. Keep up the good work!”
“We have done a lot of new stuff – its out of my comfort zone but I am really enjoying it. I am starting to lead and I wouldn’t have done this last year. I like helping new people.”
